How is Breast Augmentation Surgery Performed?

The surgical process begins after the appropriate prosthesis is decided for the patient. Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes 1-2 hours on average. A 4-5 cm incision is made in the breast and the prosthesis is placed. This incision can be made in the inframammary fold, under the breast head or under the armpit.

Prostheses Used in Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast prostheses are similar in shape to breasts and have a balloon appearance. There are two main types as round and drop breast prosthesis. Drop prostheses are closer to normal breast appearance. It is preferred for patients with little breast tissue. Drop prostheses create a fuller appearance on the nipple and lower part. In the selection of prosthesis, the patient’s breast tissue, the structure of the rib cage, weight and height are the points to be considered. Before placing the prosthesis, which the plastic surgeon decides to be suitable, he tries the test prosthesis for the last time and makes a final evaluation on the patient. A larger and smaller prosthesis is also tried on, and a healthier decision is made and the appropriate prosthesis is placed. The determination of the prosthesis and the incision area may vary depending on the person, the condition of the breast and the surgeon’s preference.

Post-Surgery Recovery Process

The post-surgical process of breast augmentation is usually comfortable. We observe our patient, whom we host in the hospital for 1 night after the operation. Minimal pain is felt. After the operation, the patient wears a specially prepared bra for the breast. It is recommended to use the bra for 4 weeks. It is normal to continue swelling and edema in the breast for a certain period of time, this will decrease over time and healing begins. The prostheses settle in the breast tissue and the breast regains its normal function. Patients can easily return to work within a few days. It is recommended to stay away from heavy sports and activities that require jumping and running for 2 months. The use of prosthesis in breast augmentation surgery usually gives satisfactory and permanent results. The person’s mental health improves and self-confidence increases.
